Summer is the perfect time to enjoy feeling confident, refreshed, and looking your best. Many beauty treatments can improve our skin, boost our confidence, and help us feel amazing — but timing is everything. Some treatments are better planned during cooler months, when your skin has the best environment to heal and recover.
One treatment that requires careful consideration during summer is microneedling. This popular skin rejuvenation treatment works by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating fibroblast cells to become more active. As a result, the skin produces more collagen, which can help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, and loss of firmness.
For best results, microneedling is usually performed as a course of treatments — often a minimum of 3 and up to 6 sessions, spaced at regular intervals. However, after creating these tiny controlled injuries, your skin becomes more vulnerable. If you expose your skin to strong sunlight or forget to regularly reapply SPF, there is a higher risk of developing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark patches caused by increased pigment production).
Because of this, microneedling is not the ideal treatment if you have a sunny holiday planned or know you will be spending a lot of time outdoors. I recommend avoiding direct sun exposure for at least 48 hours after treatment and then protecting your skin with a gentle, sensitive SPF moisturiser — preferably a mineral-based sunscreen.
Another popular summer treatment is waxing. Smooth, hair-free skin is always in demand during warmer months, especially before holidays, beach days, and special occasions. However, planning is important. Waxing removes the top layer of dead skin cells and can leave your skin more sensitive, making it easier to burn. Ideally, book your waxing appointment at least 72 hours before sun exposure.
If you are planning to swim, it is also best to wait around 48 hours after waxing before entering swimming pools. Newly treated skin can be more sensitive, and exposure to pool chemicals and bacteria may increase the chance of irritation.
Treatments for unwanted blemishes or certain skin concerns are often best carried out during the cooler seasons. Lower temperatures can support easier healing, reduce sweating, friction, and inflammation, and lower the risk of pigmentation changes. Aftercare is usually much easier when the skin is not constantly exposed to heat and intense UV rays.
So, what SPF should you choose?
For sensitive skin types and children, mineral SPF is often a great option. It usually has a thicker texture and works immediately by creating a protective barrier that reflects UV rays away from the skin.
Chemical SPF works differently. It needs to be applied around 20 minutes before sun exposure and works by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat within the skin.
Whatever SPF you choose, remember: the most important part is consistent application. Reapply regularly, especially after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.
Beautiful skin is not only about treatments — it is also about protecting and respecting your skin at the right time of year.
